    Recruitment drive in Canterbury (4:46)

An “enormous” recruitment drive ramp up is needed in Christchurch to fuel the region’s rebuild, a member of the Canterbury Employment Skills Board says.

Alex Bouma told TV ONE’s Breakfast today, on the one year anniversary of the devastating quake, that the recruitment drive in Canterbury has started but that many more jobs need to be filled.

According to the organisation, which was set up in 2011 to provide a workforce strategy for Christchurch, job vacancies in the region are 50% above the national norm at the moment and the construction industry has grown by 18% since the February quake.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.

Archer Daniels Midland Co. said Tuesday that it is firing 175 people at its headquarters in Illinois as part of a plan to cut what it now says will be 1,200 mostly salaried jobs across the company.

Decatur-based ADM said earlier this year that it planned to cut 1,000 jobs through a combination of layoffs and buyouts.

The company wouldn’t provide specifics about where other cuts are happening, but it said it should be finished eliminating jobs in the United States this week. Elsewhere, the process will continue.
